Outsourcing Your Leadership
Knowing how to pick a sacrificial lamb is another key strategy to have up your sleeve if you mess up a digital business transformation. It's a terrific technique to provide cover because you can set up someone else to accept blame for all of your mistakes on your own.
We'll look at this little-known piece of advice from 'The Secret Playbook for Screwing Up Your Digital' Transformation,' part of the 'Habits of Unsuccessful Digital Transformation' series.
Let's get this thing governed!
You've set up a governance forum and surrounded yourself with a good number of C-Level business unit owners...and even some who have no role in delivery or any stake in the outcome...just to make sure the numbers are correct now that you've secured the funding and ensured you've followed 'Habit #2 – Spreading Accountability.'
You're experiencing a new surge of delusory confidence because you now have all the framework you need to deflect responsibility for the outcome on others. 'At the very least, if we screw this up, we'll all be in this together...right?' you reason. ...‘
Basically, you've done an excellent job of anticipating your...' oh crap' moments. You determine that the forum should meet every two weeks to keep things on track.
You Can Outsource Your Leadership
Now is the moment to choose a sacrificial lamb. You consider who you should turn to when it comes to selecting someone to lead the 'real work' on your behalf.
You've probably heard it a thousand times: business and IT must work hand in hand on digital transformation projects. You think to yourself, "gees... it's a coin flip...should I select one of my own people...or do I designate the IT guy or gal to lead this if this goes wrong?"
..‘I don't want to lose my best workers, so I'll delegate this to IT...that should be enough!
You tell the IT guy or gal, "Don't worry....I'll be there every step of the way...I'll be your sponsor in the governance forum to make sure you receive everything you need...and your boss is in there too, so you'll be well looked after."
The IT guy or gal gives you a wry smile...you can sense their anxiety over the issue, but neither of you speaks out because you've given them the strong impression that your handover is complete and you have entire faith in them...they don't have the means to speak up now...The task has been completed...Now that you've chosen your sacrificial lamb, all you have to do is sit back and watch your first endeavor go apart.
